Frame film

As indicated in the October newsletter, SKAR is making a one-time gift of window frame film (and accompanying tape) available to all tenants. We hope that this gift to you will improve the comfort and thus the enjoyment of work in the studios.

Frame film is a simple way to better insulate large areas of windows by turning single-pane glass into double-pane glass. The frame film insulates in both winter and summer, lasts for several years, and is basically easy for tenants to apply themselves. This offer does not apply to common areas, only to studios.

Inventory quantity of foil
We asked a consultant to take stock of a number of properties. Based on his research, a recording list was made as an aid, so that the amount of foil per property can be determined. You yourselves as tenants are responsible for the inventory and execution of the foil application within your own studio.

Logistical handling
For the inventory, it is necessary to designate a contact person/contact person for this purpose who collects and lists the quantity of foil sheets per workshop. Read here the instruction about the inventory and download the recording list (excel). The completed list can be sent to SKAR via info@skar-ateliers.nl to the attention of Mariƫtte Maaskant . After receiving the list, SKAR will contact the contact person to collect the amount of frame film.

Workable logistics and personal responsibility are key to this project. Our team is unfortunately not equipped to:
- discuss frame film issues with tenants individually;
- take individual orders from tenants.

Instruction implementation
There is ainstruction made for you about preparations, safe (working) together and tips before and during the application of the film. Also added the instruction manual of the supplier. Please read it carefully and good luck!

SKAR offers insulation materials free of charge up to a maximum amount. Once that amount is reached, you will have to pay for other insulation materials for your studio yourself.

Insulation course

As previously announced, SKAR wants to offer tenants knowledge transfer about insulation with a course by energy coaches from WijkEnergie Werkt. And we have a new date because the previous date gave too few registrations.

What will you learn?
You will get tips & tricks on sneakiness, crack sealing and use of draft strips and window film. The goal of the course is to learn which insulating measures you can take yourself, what the effects are, what materials you need and how to install it.

For taking this course, SKAR does set some prerequisites. Namely:
- you have time and energy to transfer the knowledge learned to other tenants within your premises;
- you will preferably be the contact person for the inventory of window film per property.

Course Insulation
Date: Friday, December 2, 2022 from 9:00-13: 00 including lunch
Location: first floor of Het Archief, Robert Fruinstraat 52, 3021 XE Rotterdam.
A maximum of 20 tenants can participate in the course (and a minimum of 12).

Sign up using this form and indicate in it if you prefer to do this task together with a co-tenant within your building. Because we understand that it is quite a lot of work. So please include these tenants by name and contact information.

Finally, we cannot provide compensation for this work. We hope that the commitment to work together to insulate will soon work out in your favor through energy savings.

Additional tips

We hereby like to share an advice from Energiewacht on how to make the boilers as energy efficient as possible. By doing so, we hope to help you to work consciously with heat and still with sufficient comfort this winter. This is an experiment for all parties, for installers such as Energiewacht, for SKAR as landlord and for you as tenants. Recommendations or adjustments that are now being tried out such as time block heating are an attempt to make the boiler work more economically and thus reduce energy consumption. However, we cannot guarantee that these additional measures will reduce energy consumption or reduce costs. Tenants cannot derive any rights from this advice.

Position radiators for good flow
For a good flow of hot water, it is wise to always have 1 radiator on in the studio at the lowest setting (setting 1). This allows the water to keep flowing through the pipes and allows the boiler to keep heating the water in the most energetic way. Heating water to a temperature of 50 degrees costs much less than heating water to 70 degrees. If the water keeps flowing, it does not have to be heated to 70 degrees as often. If the boiler is at a standstill because all the radiators are closed, then the cold water has to be heated much more, which costs twice as much energy.
Therefore, the advice is to leave 1 radiator in each studio on the lowest setting, even when you are not there.
Discuss with your studio mates how you can deal with this.

Insulating heating pipes
It only makes sense to insulate pipes that run through unheated spaces, such as the hallway. Heated rooms are often used more intensively, so the efficiency is too low.

Radiator film
The problem with heating with radiators is the heat radiated by the radiator to the colder outside wall. There are several ways to keep the exterior wall from being heated by the radiator. Tackling at the source is the most effective approach. This can ideally be done by sticking radiator foil directly behind the radiator. So the approach at the source here is to remove heat radiation from the radiator itself. Therefore, you stick foil to the radiator with suitable tape or magnets. Supplier Tonzon offers this radiator foil, which has little or no effect on the convection capacity of the radiator, because this foil itself has no thermal resistance.
Note! Ordinary radiator foil does have a thermal resistance and therefore cannot be stuck on the back of the radiator, as this reduces the net heat output. Orient yourself which type of radiator foil works best for your situation.

The energy price ceiling

As you know, the energy price cap is one of the cabinet's proposals to keep energy bills affordable. The plan is that all small consumers of energy (households, self-employed, small businesses and associations) up to a certain level of consumption will pay no more than a maximum price. Tenants with their own energy contracts outside SKAR will thus presumably qualify for the energy price cap, which applies to connections where people live or work. For tenants without individual energy contracts, unfortunately, this is not an option. SKAR is currently investigating whether it can meet the conditions set for SMEs to qualify for compensation. As soon as we have more news on this, we will get back to you.

Rotterdam artists in awards

Artist Peter Koole wins two awards
Visual artist Peter Koole (tenant Borgerstraat) has won two awards recently. On Oct. 27 during Erasmus Week Rotterdam with the theme "War and Peace," Peter Koole received the Praise of Folly Pin 2022 from the hands of Faouzi Achbar, deputy mayor and alderman for Welfare, Sports and Digital Inclusiveness. An award for someone who lives and works in the spirit of Erasmus, because as a fellow townsman, Koole reports on wrongs in our time in his own unique way.

And in late August, Peter Koole won the Jeanne Oosting Prize 2022, consisting of a cash prize of ā‚¬7,500 and a bronze medal. The Jeanne Oosting Prize celebrates lively figurative painting in the Netherlands. A unique feature of the prize is that the jury consists only of fellow artists. From the jury report: "The jury chose Peter Koole (1958, Middelburg) based on his long-standing committed commitment to his subjects, such as the (aftermath of the) Balkan War, the fall of Srebrenica and the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya. His sophisticated, dedicated and urgent paintings are currently more topical than ever."

Terra Ultima book by Raoul Deleo awarded with "The Golden Brush
On Friday, Sept. 29, during the Children's Book Ball, the book " Terra Ultima " by Rotterdam artist Raoul Deleo (tenant Nesserdijk) was awarded "Het Gouden Penseel" for the best illustrated children's book of 2021. The award is one of the most important literary prizes for Dutch children's and youth literature. Each year, the CPNB jury (their main mission: to enrich people's lives by getting them to read more books) selects and awards the best books published in the previous year. The winner of the Golden Brush is chosen from among all the Silver Brush winners awarded earlier this year.

Raoul Deleo: "I am truly honored and stunned at the same time. The book about the discovery of an unknown continent has received so much praise and publicity. As a discoverer, explorer and illustrator, this is everything (and more) I hoped and wished for. Many thanks to everyone who helped me publish this book, especially the compiler , Noah J. Stern, and my publisher, Lannoo ."

Tapestry Jolanda Linssen at IKC DE Lis

An artwork by visual artist Jolanda Linssen (tenant Ackersdijkstraat) was unveiled on Nov. 4 at IKC De Lis, an integral child center (school, child care and BSO under one roof).

Her WANDTAPIJT is large, warm, intimate, cuddly and craftily made. An object with a story. "The hand that protects you, catches you, helps you, supports you, shows you the way and gives you a nudge when needed. This artwork was conceived to amaze and inspire children to get started themselves. Accompanying the artwork is the HANDwork curriculum, which focuses on crafts. Learning to weave or make a carpet design is a new experience the children of IKC De Lis have gained in collaboration with Jolanda. A great example of how artists contribute to stimulating creativity and imagination in children from the same neighborhood.

The WANDTAPIJT was developed by Jolanda Linssen and brought about by a donation from 'Makersloket', Stichting Droom & Daad. For the realization of the carpet, cooperation was sought with Rotterdam entrepreneur Karin of Fairfabrics. She has contacts with women's cooperatives abroad, including one in Morocco. Fatima and Khadisja of a cooperative in Morocco wove and knotted the gigantic tapestry by hand.

SKAR encourages collaborations with partners and has linked IKC De Lis with the artists at Ackersdijkstraat, an adjacent studio building, in early 2022 to develop an art class during after-school care.
