Anuli Croon

Anuli Croon's colourful, tightly designed paintings automatically activate the viewer's reservoir of associations; images and impressions of enigma, ambiguity, references to folk art expressions, cartoon characters and advertising images, everyday utensils, fabric patterns and universal symbolic signs for human gestures and body language are just a few elements of her visual language.

On closer inspection, even more signs of ambiguity appear in the image; does one figure in the series 'Tronie en Stad' now put his arms around the other figure for protection, or does the opposite take place here and we see a hostile sneaking closer, a compulsion to subjugate. The word Tronie in the title seems to refer to an unsympathetic character, but at the same time the colourful, schematically shaped faces of the figures evoke more friendly associations. All these seemingly opposing qualities of openness and secrecy, of decorative playfulness and profundity characterise the work of this remarkable painter.' text Vera Illes, Anton Hoeksema
