Looking back first SKAR Talks

"What a good initiative. Very stimulating."

On 16 February SKAR organised SKAR Talks for the first time: a meeting for all SKAR tenants on topics relevant to them. In this first edition Vlad Butucariu of Studio Squash and artist Sasja Hagens spoke. All seats were taken in the hall of the RET building, and afterwards there was of course a drink.

With SKAR Talks we want to bring tenants together and provide our network with new inspiration. In this first edition of SKAR Talks we looked at alternative earning models. Vlad Butucariu of Studio Squash showed how he was able to raise 50,000 euros with crowdfunding for his laptop stands Flio. Vlad used the site Kickstarter for this. Two things were crucial for success: telling the right story in the right way, so with beautiful and clear video, images and text. In addition, you have to do a lot of marketing yourself. Vlad: 'We've sent out hundreds, maybe thousands, of e-mails to media and bloggers ourselves. It wasn't until a renowned blogger paid attention to us that Kickstarter hit the ground running'.

"Embrace business.
Painter of harbour and nature works Sasja Hagens knew she had to go a different way when a gallery told her to work smaller. "While I wanted to be big. She decided to follow her own path and bought paint with her last money. Lots of paint. And she approached companies in the harbor. It was a start of great success: her paintings hang all the way to Singapore and at renowned companies like Deloitte. She doesn't do business with the art world anymore. As an artist, don't be afraid of business. They speak exactly the same language as we do: clear and straightforward. On the contrary, we are very much alike'.

From the attendees we received many positive reactions, such as from Herma Klijnstra: "What a good initiative yesterday. Very stimulating. Thanks. With extra energy at work today."
